How can I take off the write protection on my SmartMedia memory card?
I have a Fujifilm SmartMedia memory card for my digital camera. One day all of a sudden my comp couldnt read it since it said there was a write protection. How can I take it off?

- there should be a little slider on the side somewhere
- Copy protection: Many SmartMedia cards include a little-known copy protection feature known as "ID". This is why many cards are marked with "ID" beside the capacity. This gave every card a unique identification number for use with copy protection systems. Is seems that it is more complicated than moving a small switch.
- The other posters are incorrect. First, copy protection is not the same thing as write protection. And you'd think that poster would have cited wikipedia as his source, since he copied it word for word from them. In any case, I have SmartMedia cards and the write protection consists of a sticker that goes in the round circle on the card itself. To turn off write protection, just remove the sticker. Check that circle to make sure that there's no sticker there and make sure that it hasn't gotten shiny somehow (shine will activate write protection). Sometimes the cards or readers do go bad, and it will show write protection, even when the card isn't write protected. You can try another reader and see if that solves the problem. EDIT: I found this place that fixes SmartMedia cards, if it's your SmartMedia card that's the problem: http://www.smartmediarepair.com/ Second edit: You may find this discussion very informative: http://www.mlancentral.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=1,2,4&Board=Media&Number=43334&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=9&o=&fpart=9
